Following are the major tourism locations in Thrissur

Vadakkunnathan Temple (Thrissur)

This temple is a classic example of the Kerala style of architecture. The temple contains the sacred shrines of Paraashiva, Parvathy,Sankaranarayana, Ganapathy, Sri Rama and Sri Krishna. The central shrines and Koothambalam exhibit exquisite vignettes carved in wood. Legend goes that this temple was founded by Parasurama

Thiruvambadi Temple (Thrissur)

Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple is one of the largest Krishna temples in Kerala. The Thiruvambady temple was originally situated in a village 15 km away from Thrissur and the main deity Lord Krishna, was, some five centuries ago, brought to Thrissur. This caused the establishment of Thiruvambady Temple at Thrissur.

Sreekrishna Temple (Guruvayoor)

The Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple is a famous Krishna temple located in the town of Guruvayur in the Thrissur district of Kerala. It is one of the most important places of worship for Hindus and is often referred to as "Bhooloka Vaikuntam"[2] which translates to the holy abode of Vishnu on Earth. The divine idol installed here represents the enchanting form of Sree Krishna endowed with the four lustrous arms carrying the conch Panchajanya, the discus Sudarshana Chakra, the mace Kaumodaki and the lotus.

Koodal Manikyam Temple (Irinjalakuda)

The temple was built by Chera king, Chenguthuvan. The deity, Kannagi (also called Bhadrakali or Bhagavathi) possesses immense power, it is believed. The main festival called Bharani is celebrated in Meenam (March-April) to symbolize the killing of demon. The temple has an unusual system during its festival. During the seven-day long festivals obscenic songs are sung by the devotees to appease the deity. The intensity of the songs has come down considerably following vehement protests from various learned sections. The government is afraid of banning it, fearing backlash from some sections. Yet another unusual ritualistic custom also prevails here �butchering of chicken during the festival.

Sreerama Temple (Triprayar)

On the banks of a beautiful river near Thrissur in Kerala almost bordering the trunk road is a big temple dedicated to Sri Rama, which combines attractive location, traditional legend and superb architecture. In the dim past, this river is believed to have skirted the temple on three sides and hence the sacred place is called Thirupuraiyar or most popularly as Triprayar.

The main idol of Sri Rama which is installed and worshipped at this temple is believed to have been originally worshipped by Sri.Krishna at Dwaraka in Sowrashtra coast. When Dwaraka was submerged, the idol of Sri Rama was lying in the sea bed along with the further idols of Lakshmana, Bharata and shaturghna.

Zoo & Archeological Museum (Thrissur)

For the animal enthusiasts, Thrissur boasts a zoo, 2 km from the town centre. Within the 13.5 acres of the compound live a variety of fauna like the lions tailed macaque, sloth bear, species of birds and deer. The snake park has a reptilian collection of King Cobras, Kraits, Vipers and Rat Snakes.

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy (Thrissur)

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy is located in Thrissur city, of Kerala, in India.It was established on April 12, 1938. Its aim is to foster and develop Kerala dance, drama and music and to promote the cultural unity of Kerala.


Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy (Thrissur)

Kerala Lalithakala Academy, Thrissur was founded in the year 1962. Art and literature occupies a prominent place in Thrissur. The main aim of the Academy is to encourage the culture, sculpture, painting, plastic and visual arts.

Kerala Lalithakala Academy in Thrissur is the nerve center of artistic and cultural events and discussions in Kerala. Kauthuka Park

Kerala Kalamandalam (Cheruthuruthy)

North of Thrissur, 29 km away near the Shoranur Railway Junction is Cheruthuruthy, home of the renowned repository of the tradition of the Kathakali dance form. It is in this academy that the best of kerala’s Kathakali performers get their rigorous training .The institution also offers training in music, drama, and other dance forms including Mohinyattam, Koodiyattam and Otam thullal.

Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls

East of Chalakudy, near the entrance to the Sholayar forest ranges, is the beautiful waterfalls of Athirapally and Vazhachal, 5 km apart.



Punnathur Kotta

Near Guruvayur , 2 km away is Punnathur kotta, the place where the elephants(numbering over 40 ) are taken care of . Nowhere else can so many elephants be seen at any time Visitors are allowed?


Chavakkadu Beach

Chavakkadu beach is situated just 5 km from Guruvayur. It is sea shore for rare scenic beauty. Unaltered by modernization and laced on the borders by an array of coconut palms.



Chettuva Backwater

From Chavakkad beach, the distance is just 6 kms to Chettuva Backwater, at Chettuva village. This popular destination is dotted with mangrove vegetation and islets. From Thrichur the distance is about 32 kms. A journey in the houseboat is cherishing memory.


Vilangan Kunnu (Thrissur)

Vilangan Kunnu (7 km from Thrissur): Vilangan Hills, Thrissur is a hillock, set amidst a picturesque locale. Situated on the outskirts of the main city of Thrissur, it is about 5 km from the city center. The hill is covered with verdant green bushes that give it a serene surrounding. The elevation provides a beautiful view of the city of Thrissur. Near the top of the hill, there is also an open air theater. Peechi Dam

The beautiful picnic spot, Peechi dam is located in Peechi village, 23 km away from Thrissur. The dam is built across the Manali river and the area comprises of nearly 3200 acres of land with botanical gardens and fountains. The prime purpose of the reservoir is to provide irrigation and drinking water supply to Thrissur city.

Chimmini Dam

Chimmony Dam, 42km from Thrissur is located in Echippara village, Varantharappily town. Established in 1984, the sanctuary with an area of about 100 km² is on the Western slopes of the Nelliyampathi hills .This is the area of wild life sanctuary, makes for a wide variety of flora still. All major species of fauna of peninsular India are well represented in the sanctuary. and can find deer, elephants, wolves, etc. The sanctuary also offers trekking paths for the adventure traveler. However, due to years of human interference, the fauna is sparse. This project in Thrissur district envisages construction of a Dam at Echippara across Chimoni river, a tributary of Karuvannur river.

Anakkayam (Chalakudy)

Anakkayam is roughly 20 kms from Chalakudy on the Sholayar Peringalkuthu route, famous for its lake with cool and placid waters. The place got its name from a herd of elephants which used to visit the place quite often and the legend goes that the place got its name because some elephants had been drowned in this lake. The place is breathtakingly beautiful with its rushing waters, chiseled rocks and silent streams.

Thumboormuzhy Check Dam & Gardens

Tourist attractions near to Athirappilly are Vazhachal Falls (5km away) and Thumboormuzhi Dam(12km away). Vazhachal Falls is a small waterfall on the Chalakkudy Puzha upstream Athirappilly falls. Tourism Department maintains a small park at Vazhachal. Thumboormuzhi Dam is an irrigation dam built on the Chalakkudy Puzha where a portion of the water from the river splits in to two canals namely Edathukara canal (left side canal) and Valathukara canal (right side canal). These canals are the backbone of the irrigation for the nearby villages. During summers almost whole of the river water will be directed towards the canals and the river bed will be visible. Apart from these attractions there are water theme parks near by Athirappilly namely Silver Storm and Dream World.
