Thrissur Pooram

Onam

Onam is the biggest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. Onam Festival falls during the Malayali month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali. Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings out the best of Kerala culture and tradition. Intricately decorated Pookalam, ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable features of Onam - the harvest festival in Kerala.

Pulikkali

Pulikali is a colorful recreational folk art from the state of Kerala. It is performed by trained artists to entertain people on the occasion of Onam. Pulikali, also known as Kaduvaakali, is a 200 year old art, carefully preserved by the artists of the state. Literal meaning of Pulikali is the 'play of the tigers' hence the performance revolve around the theme of tiger hunting. The folk art is mainly practiced in Thrissur (Trichur) and Palghat districts of Kerala. Best place to watch the show is Swaraj Ground at Thrissur on the fourth day of Onam, where Pulikali troupes from all over the district assemble to display their skills.

It is a wonderful sight to see humans in the guise of tigers roaming in the streets. Children, specifically take great delight in their performance as the entertainers dance, pounce and walk like a tiger. Scenes of tiger hunting goats and tiger being hunted by a human beings are also beautifully depicted by them. Beat for the dance movement is provided by percussion instruments like 'udukku' and 'thakil'.

Kodungallur Bharani

The Bharani festival at the Kodungallur Bhagawati temple is one of the grandest in Kerala. It is a month of festivities from the Bharani asterism in the month of Aquarius to 7 days after the Bharani asterism in the month of Pisces. Traditionally the temple (especially during the Bharani festival) has been associated with a lot of animal sacrifices. These customs have been done away with in the 20th century. The blood of the sacrificed used to be spilled over two stones in the prakaram, and as mentioned above, this practice is now stopped.

The Bharani festival also witnesses the offering of worship to the deity in the innermost sanctum by those belonging to castes other than the priestly class. One day before the final Bharani, the chandanapodi Chartal or the smearing of the image with sandal paste is carried out. There are further festivities on this day and the following day.

Thousands from all over Kerala congregate to celebrate this festival amidst great paegentry.

Arattupuzha Pooram

The Arattupuzha Pooram is described as 'the greatest Devamela on earth' and it is the oldest pooram festival in Kerala. The 'ezhunnellippu' or 'procession of the thidambu' or 'idol of the Arattupuzha Sastha include grandly caparisoned elephants and traditional percussionists.

The festival will be celebrated in the 1st of March, this year.

Aarattupuzha Pooram, is the festival that sees the largest elephant stage entry in which about 70 majestically caparisoned elephants participate. Aarattupuzha is about 14 km from Thrissur town and the famous Ayyappa temple at Aarattupuzha is just 14 kms from Thrissur, and it is at this temple that the annual pooram festival is celbrated.

Machadu Mamangam

Machadu is situated near Wadakkanchery. Thiruvanikavu Temple is also known as Machattu Vela, which is celebrated in the month of February. This is the annual festival at Thiruvanikavu Temple. Poykuthiras (Horses) in ceremonial processions are the main majesty of this festival. Devotees bring highly decorated Poykuthiras as offering to the deity.

Uthralikkavu Pooram

The Uthralikkavu Pooram, is one of the most important festivals of Thrissur District. This eight-day long festival is dedicated to Goddess Kali, and is celebrated at the Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple in Wadakkanchery, usually in the month of February. The temple is located about 20 kilometers away from Thrissur town. The highlight of this festival is the day and night elephant processions. The final day of the festival is celebrated as pooram day. The main attraction of the festival is a massive fireworks display.

Guruvayoor

Guruvayoor is among India's most important pilgrimage centres. It is known as the Dwaraka of the South. The Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, which attracts thousands of pilgrims is said to date, prior to the 16th century. The major festivals in Guruvayoor temple are Ekadasi, Utsavam (Annual Festival), Ashtami Rohini, Vishu, etc. The major cutural festivals in gurvayoor are Chembai Music Festival, Narayaneeyam Day, Poonthanam day
